Photoshop Color Loss Problem

When I got my Mac, I definitely had no complaints. That was until I realized my images were losing their color when I saved them, whether I used File > Save as or File > Save for Web and Devices. I’m not blaming this on my Mac, it’s actually a monitor issue. I searched and searched for a solution only to end up with nothing. I started messing around with settings and came up with a solution. So if you’ve been hunting the web for a fix to color loss, YES this is one that actually works.

It looked something like this after I saved the images:

Photoshop Color Loss

Proof Color Setup

To fix this, go to View > Proof Setup > Monitor RGB. (make sure that is checked). Go back to the View menu and make sure Proof Colors is also checked (2nd from top).

It is VERY important Proof Colors is always checked (CMD+Y).

Changing Color Settings

Go to Edit > Color Settings. On the RGB drop down menu, select sRGB IEC61966-2.1. I posted a screen shot of my settings below, so you can refer to that to make sure everything matches up.

Saving the Image

The last thing you need to do is go to File > Save for Web and Devices. This works in PNG, JPG, and GIF perfectly. It is also a good idea to check the Convert to sRGB box.

Test it Out

To do a quick test on whether your image is still losing color or not. Go to File > Save for Web and Devices. In the top left corner of that box, click the Original tab. Go back and forth between Original and Optimized. There should be no color change in your image preview.

Again, I want to note: it is VERY important Proof Colors is always checked! (CMD+Y on Mac) (CTRL+Y on PC) or View > Proof Colors.

Hope this worked for you, if you need help on this or have a different solution, leave a comment.

I use Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended ($999), but the basic version is $699. Expensive, I know.

Thank you! Ah, this is the exact problem I have with my Mac. Although I’ll be honest and admit that I never really searched for a solution (lazy) ha. But I am glad I came across this!

    Thanks again!!
